Despite being a Cameron, Wheezie has never played a key role in Outer Banks. As the little sister, she was often manipulated and lied about what was happening. Perhaps she doesn’t know what made Rose separate her from her sister. However, Wheezie has demonstrated a true loyalty to Sarah, and a talent for acquiring information due to everyone underestimating her. Even if Rafe and Wheezie got along well, his main objective was always to be close to his father. With Ward gone, it makes sense Rafe didn’t try to keep Rose and Wheezie in the Outer Banks. He and his stepmother have never gotten along, and she doesn’t trust him to protect them. In a shocking twist, however, season 4 part 1 ending introduces Rafe’s desire to redeem himself, continuing his complicated character arc in the show. Drew Starkey’s character seems haunted by his past actions and confesses his determination to bring the family together, starting with making amends with Sarah.
Because of their violent history, it’s unlikely that Rafe alone could convince Sarah to trust him — that’s where his little sister could come in.
