Netflix’s latest spy thriller Black Doves delivered an explosive debut season in late 2024, but will the Keira Knightley action vehicle score a season 2 renewal? Developed for the small screen by Joe Barton, Black Doves follows Knightley’s Helen Webb, a secret agent who has been passing the secrets of her high-ranking government official husband to the titular organization. However, when her secret lover is killed, Helen’s boss sends a master assassin in to protect her from becoming the next target. Mixing a story about loyalty and family with global intrigue, Black Doves is a fresh take on spies.
Naturally, the cast of Black Doves shines because of the performances of Knightley and Ben Whishaw, and the Christmastime backdrop fittingly adds to the ambiance. As with any spy series, the story is more than it seems, and Black Doves offered a twisting and turning ride across its six-episode debut season. Though the finale did offer a modicum of closure to the whole ordeal, it’s clear from season 1, episode 6, “In the Bleak Midwinter”, that Helen’s job was far from over. Now the ball is in Netflix’s court, and they must decide if the critically acclaimed series will return.
Black Doves Season 2 Latest News
Plans Are In Place For Season 2’s Story
While Netflix continues to mull over the fate of their latest critically-acclaimed original series, the most recent news finds Joe Barton discussing his plans for Black Doves season 2 (via Netflix). Barton is the creator of Black Doves, and he spoke candidly about his hopes for the story of the potential follow-up season. Speaking about Knightley’s Helen, Barton said he hopes season 2 “increases the pressure and the danger on her as a spy.” He also aims to get the supporting characters more involved, and explore the tension of having them all in London together.
Read Barton’s full comment below:
“Just seeing the tension of that, seeing Sam back in London … I would like to see more Eleanor and Williams, Kai-Ming, all those people. I’d like to start to throw them up against one another again, and maybe make things more dangerous and challenging for them”
Black Doves Season 2 Is Not Confirmed
Now Word Yet On The Sophomore Season
Being perhaps the biggest hub for original streaming content, Netflix produces a slew of new shows each year. Many of those shows don’t go anywhere, but that isn’t likely going to be the case for Black Doves. With its star-studded cast, exciting premise, and strong critical reviews, Black Doves has all the makings of an ongoing success for the big red streaming service. However, there are also a few things working against it, including its high cost, which requires it to be a massive success in order to break even.
The jury is still out on how well Black Doves has fared in terms of viewership numbers, and it will take a little while for Netflix to fully assess the data over time. Unlike network TV shows which call on ratings shares from week to week, Netflix’s strategy of dumping whole seasons at once means the shows get discovered by new viewers over time. Ultimately, the success or failure of a Netflix show comes down to the consistency of watch time, and there’s no reason to think that the twisty thriller won’t hook viewers for all six episodes.
Black Doves Season 2 Cast Details
Which Agents Will Return In Season 2?
Series creator Joe Barton has already revealed that he hopes to bring back many of the show’s supporting characters in season 2, and that should be in addition to the main cast, who thrilled in the debut episodes. Black Doves season 2 wouldn’t be the same without its star, Keira Knightley, as mother, wife, and secret agent, Helen Webb. Joining her will be Andrew Buchan, and British politician and PM hopeful, Wallace Webb. Meanwhile, Ben Whishaw’s deft assassin Sam Young will also likely return.
One fascinating new opportunity to explore in season 2’s cast is the developing dynamic between humorous assassins Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) and Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), and Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei), the daughter of the late Ambassador Chen. Furthermore, Helen’s relationship with her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), changed during season 1, but there’s no reason to think that they won’t be working together again in the future. The second season could also introduce a new set of characters, but only time will tell.
The presumptive cast of Black Doves season 2 includes:
Actor | Black Doves Role | |
---|---|---|
Keira Knightley | Helen Webb |
|
Ben Whishaw | Sam Young |
|
Andrew Buchan | Wallace Webb |
|
Sarah Lancashire | Reed |
|
Eleanor | Gabrielle Creevy |

Black Doves Season 2 Story Details
Helen Returns To Her Double Life
After spending the first six episodes of the series trying to discover who killed her lover, Jason, Helen then decided to return to her double life as a wife, mother, and secret agent. This clearly sets the stage for her going into season 2, especially as Wallace pushes to become the country’s next Prime Minister. With access to the highest elected seat in the land, Helen and the Black Doves could get their hands on a lot of important information. Meanwhile, Sam must deal with the fallout of season 1, and assess how his life as an assassin ruins his chances of forming relationships.
Series creator Joe Barton teased ideas for season 2, including focusing in on what he describes as the show’s found families. Season 1 introduced the charming and witty assassin duo of Williams and Eleanor, and they struck up an unlikely friendship with the late Ambassador Chen’s daughter, Kai-Ming. Though a life of espionage is not usually conducive to one’s health, Black Doves season 2 could see Kai-Ming ditch her partying and become a trained assassin alongside her new friends.
