Virgin River season 6 releases on Netflix on Thursday, December 19th, 2024.
With the upcoming release of Virgin River season 6, fans should look back on many previous storylines and characters to prepare for what’s coming next. Based on the Virgin River books by Robyn Carr, the eponymous show is one of the longest-running Netflix shows, with 61 episodes as of season 6 plus a guaranteed 7th season. Luckily, with 21 novels and numerous anthologies, there is plenty of material to adapt for the show.
Besides lasting for so long, Virgin River sets itself apart from most other Netflix shows because it includes very few filler episodes. Each episode is packed with character and development, frequently throwing in twists and cliffhangers. The connections between the Virgin River characters are an ever-expanding web with many nuances and secrets. As such, fans will need to remember many key details from previous seasons going into Virgin River season 6.
Mel And Jack Will Getting Married
Mel And Jack Officially Get Together In Virgin River Season 3
The first time Jack proposes to Mel, she cuts him off by telling him that she is pregnant. At the end of Virgin River season 4, Mel and Jack finally get engaged. Rather than centering on their wedding, their season 5 storyline focuses on Mel’s high-risk pregnancy and the couple’s grief over the miscarriage. Luckily, the synopsis for Virgin River season 6 confirms that the pair will get married in the new season. If everything goes as planned, the pair will marry on the farm they purchased in the Christmas special.
Tudum, which Netflix runs, made a fake wedding website for the pair, which shares details about the wedding. Joey and Brie will act as the maids of honor, Preacher will be the best man, and Mike will act as the groomsman. However, the wedding will likely involve some hiccups, as nothing goes exactly as planned in Virgin River.
Mel Finds Her Biological Father
Mel’s Biological Father Is Everett Reid
During the two-episode Christmas special of Virgin River season 5, Mel learns that her mother had an affair with a man who lived in the town and that she was not the biological daughter of the man who raised her. She decides that she wants to know the identity of her biological father. Jack helps her to track down the man, and she goes up to his house to meet him.
Though he initially denies his connection to her, he later shows up and confirms his identity. Mel’s new connection will undoubtedly cause tension because Doc has stepped in as a father figure for the nurse, even agreeing to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. Additionally, his identity raises just as many questions as it answers, such as how Everett met Mel’s mom.
Lizzie Is Having A Baby
Lizzie Announces Her Pregnancy At The End Of Virgin River Season 5, Part 1
Since she came to Virgin River, Lizzie has transformed from a wild child party girl to a responsible young woman who fits into her community. In addition to working alongside Hope in the mayor’s office, she’s pregnant with a baby and thrilled to be a mother. The presumed father is Denny, Doc’s grandson, who has settled down in the town. Virgin River season 6 will feature a time jump, meaning Lizzie will be further along in her pregnancy than in the holiday episodes.
However, everything might not be smooth sailing for the couple, as the Virgin River books by Robyn Carr offer a significant twist when it comes to Lizzie’s pregnancy. However, this could also end up as one of the many differences between the Virgin River books and the show, allowing Lizzie and Denny to make a family.
The Police Finds Wes’ Body
Preacher Helps Bury The Body Of Paige’s Abusive Husband In Virgin River Season 2
The holiday episodes brought up many big questions that Virgin River season 6 will need to answer, and one of the biggest relates to a previous Preacher storyline. In season 2, Preacher is in a relationship with a woman named Paige, who accidentally kills her abusive husband by pushing him down the stairs when he is going after her son. Preacher disposes of the body for her because he doesn’t believe that the police will think she acted in self-defense.
The characters have spent the subsequent seasons worrying that the body will be found. Unfortunately, Preacher’s fear comes true in Virgin River’s season 5 Christmas episodes. The situation is also complicated because Kaia – Preacher’s new girlfriend – is the fire chief, and the fire department finds the body. This will undoubtedly shape his story in season 6.
Lark Has A History With Jimmy
Jimmy Is The Father Of Lark’s Daughter, Hazel
In the Christmas episodes of Virgin River, Lark takes a jail phone call from Jimmy, the right-hand man of Calvin. In the second season, he and Brady have a contentious relationship with Jimmy getting jealous of Brady’s new role in the illegal drug trade. During the phone call, Lark says Brady doesn’t suspect anything, hinting that she might have nefarious intentions with the relationship.
Viewers also learn that Jimmy has some sort of connection with Lark’s daughter, Hazel. (The showrunner, Patrick Sean Smith, seems to confirm he’s her father in an interview with Deadline.) Since Jimmy is behind bars, it seems he is using his connections on the outside, like Lark, to do his bidding. Smith confirmed that Jimmy will have a bigger role in Virgin River season 6.
Everett Has Something To Tell Mel
Virgin River Season 5’s Second Christmas Episode Ends On A Cliffhanger
The Virgin River creative team loves including plot twists and cliffhangers, and season 5, part 2 was no exception. The Christmas story starts with the bombshell revelation that Mel is the lovechild of her mother’s affair. In the final moments of the holiday-themed episodes, Everett comes to see Mel, saying he has something to tell her.
Smith confirmed in the Deadline interview that the viewers will get a resolution to this cliffhanger in season 6, but how and when is a mystery at this point, given the time jump. Fans have come up with many theories about what he could tell her, the most popular of which relates to Mel having a step-sibling in Virgin River. However, the introduction of step-siblings could threaten to over-expand the already massive cast.
Muriel Asks Cameron To Think About Whether He Wants Children
Cameron And Muriel Have An Age Gap Between Them
One of the most beloved relationships in the show formed in Virgin River season 5, pairing up Cameron and Muriel. The pair had both previously fallen for other characters who were in relationships, making it satisfying that they find solace in one another. They have excellent chemistry and show affection to each other in sweet, small ways. However, a potential conflict in their relationship is the age difference between the Virgin River characters.
Based on the actors’ ages, Cameron is around 45, and Muriel is around 60, placing them at slightly different stages of life. Muriel makes it clear to Cameron that she has zero interest in having children, asking him to think about whether he is okay with that. Based on this conversation in the Christmas episodes, Cameron has a big decision to make in Virgin River season 6.
Doc Will Participate In A Medical Trial For His Eyesight
Doc Has Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration In Virgin River
Doc Mullins has gone through significant character growth since his diagnosis with wet age-related macular degeneration (Wet AMD), taking steps to care for his patients while also treating his disease. He receives injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor medicines into his eyes to treat the illness, but they stop working in one of his eyes during Virgin River season 5.
By the end of the season, he’s decided to sign up for a medical trial to treat his Wet AMD after another patient drops out. This medical trial has the potential to make his eyesight worse, but it also has a chance of treating the illness, allowing him to prolong his vision for as long as possible. Luckily, Smith confirmed that the treatment will work.
Brady And Brie Almost Kissed Under The Mistletoe
The Couple Break Up In Virgin River Season 5
Brady and Brie have been Virgin River’s will-they-won’t-they couple, going back and forth between being together and apart. They break up in Virgin River season 5 because Brady lies and withholds information from Brie repeatedly. Despite Brady still loving Brie, they both find happiness in new relationships – Brie with Mike and Brady with Lark. They even seem to express happiness for each other despite the sadness of seeing a past love move on.
However, they find themselves under the mistletoe in a Christmas episode, and they very clearly lean in to kiss. However, they’re interrupted. This moment will be critical in Virgin River season 6. Smith says in the Deadline interview that the writers think of Brady, Lark, Brie, and Mike as a love rectangle. Between the near-kiss and Smith’s comments, it’s clear that the spark of romance between Brie and Brady isn’t gone.
Ricky Is Away From Virgin River In The Marines
Ricky Doesn’t Appear In Virgin River Season 5
In Virgin River season 4, Ricky leaves the town after enlisting in the Marines. Lizzie – his ex-girlfriend – and Denny gather his loved ones and friends to make “goodbye” and “congratulations” signs to show him before he leaves. Sadly, he doesn’t come back in Virgin River season 5. However, that doesn’t mean his absence isn’t felt.
During the fires, his grandmother Lydie expresses fear and sorrow about his absence, trying to pack up all his keepsakes in the car before departing to safety. Though it’s not confirmed, Ricky’s return to Virgin River feels inevitable based on the continued references to him. The wedding would also feel empty without him there. Plus, Ricky has a major storyline from the books that hasn’t happened onscreen yet. Though they could cut the storyline, it also could serve as an excuse to bring back the Virgin River character.
Virgin River Is Opening A Birthing Center
Doc’s Medical Practice Is Expanding With The New Team Members
Toward the end of Virgin River season 5, Doc, Cameron, Mel, and Muriel sit down to have a conversation about the future of their medical practice. Two significant changes are occurring: they’re adding telehealth appointments, and they’re opening a birthing center. The former will allow Doc to continue practicing medicine as he goes through treatment for his Wet AMD. The latter will focus on obstetrics and gynecology, giving the people who can get pregnant in Virgin River and the surrounding towns a place focused on their needs.
Since Mel is a nurse and birthing specialist, she will most likely take on a leading role in the birthing center. Additionally, the birthing center could serve as an open door for Mel to meet a pregnant person who wishes to put their child up for adoption, a potential way for Jack and Mel to expand their family.
Charmaine Has Newborn Twins
Charmaine’s Twins Finally Come In The Virgin River Season 5 Christmas Special
Charmaine’s pregnancy has become a running gag among fans of the Netflix drama because she remains pregnant for almost five full seasons, making Virgin River’s timeline extremely confusing. Luckily, Charmaine finally gives birth to her twin boys in season 5’s Christmas episodes, bringing her abnormally long gestational period to an end.
However, the birth brings about a whole new host of issues as the twins’ father, Calvin, has come back into the picture. The former drug kingpin demands that Charmaine let him be a father to the babies, and she fears that she has no option because of their biology. Between Mel’s paternity triangle, Jimmy, and Calvin, Virgin River season 6 is slated to focus heavily on paternal roles and relationships.
