Warning! This Post Contains Spoilers For The Diplomat Season 2!
Netflix’s smash-hit political thriller The Diplomat returned for its sophomore season in late 2024, and now the streamer has renewed the show for season 3. Created by Debora Cahn, the series concerns the American ambassador to the United Kingdom, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), who is tasked with easing international tensions while dealing with her own crumbling personal life. Balancing the high-stakes tension of political thrillers with the intimate drama of the characters’ lives, The Diplomat made a huge splash when it arrived in 2023. A slew of award nominations and other accolades were met with a swift renewal from Netflix.
Season 2 of The Diplomat ratcheted up the tension and escalated things even beyond the explosive conclusion to season 1. A bombing aboard a British warship has fingers pointing in all directions, but Kate soon learns that disgraced (and soon to be former) Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) is behind the attack. Though a series of political maneuvers almost secures Kate the Vice Presidency, the shocking death of President Rayburn means the power-mad Vice President has ascended to the highest office in the land. Fortunately for fans, Netflix swiftly renewed the show, so The Diplomat is certain to return.
The Diplomat Season 3 Latest News
Netflix Preemptively Renews Season 3
In a move that came as quite a surprise, the latest news confirms that Netflix has renewed The Diplomat for season 3. Though the renewal wasn’t necessarily shocking on its own, it’s the fact that it came weeks before the sophomore season even debuted on the platform. The streamer’s confidence in the series is obvious, and it’s clear they want to keep the team together with the return of creator and showrunner Debora Cahn.
It was also revealed that the season is already in production, and will film in both Brooklyn, New York, and London. At this juncture, it’s unclear if Brooklyn factors into the story, or if the production is merely filming there in a studio or soundstage. Debora Cahn issued a glowing statement in the wake of the season 3 renewal, saying:
After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.

“It can be assumed that the political thriller will have trouble maintaining a season-per-year clip going into season 3”
After the award-winning debut season, it seemed as if Netflix had another multi-season hit on their hands, and it’s clear that the trend has continued into season 2 as well. Weeks before the second season even dropped on the platform, Netflix announced that season 3 of The Diplomat was on the way, and that production had already started. Though a full timeline isn’t available, it can be assumed that the political thriller will have trouble maintaining a season-per-year clip going into season 3.
The Diplomat Season 3 Cast Details
Kate Will Return In Season 3
Like most of Netflix’s big original series, the cast of The Diplomat is a star-studded affair that only got more ambitious in season 2. Considering the outcome of the sophomore outing, it’s assumed that the entirety of the cast will reprise their roles, save for the late President Rayburn (Michael McKean). Leading the charge will be star and producer Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the embattled ambassador to the UK. Joining her will be Rufus Sewell as her estranged diplomat husband, Hal, and their relationship troubles are far from settled by this point.
The ensemble added Allison Janney as the disgraced US Vice President Grace Penn in season 2, and since she has now ascended to the Presidency, she will certainly return to punish Kate for what she knows. Other supporting cast members like Rory Kinnear as UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge will also need to be on hand, and the diplomatic tensions between the allied nations have only just started. David Gyasi should be back as UK Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, alongside Ato Essandoh as Kates deputy chief, Stuart Hayford.
The presumptive cast of season 3 includes:
Actor | The Diplomat Role | |
---|---|---|
Keri Russell | Kate Wyler |

David Gyasi | Austin Dennison |

The Diplomat Season 3 Story Details
President Penn Means Big Trouble For Kate
As if the sophomore season was trying to top the shocking conclusion to season 1, the ending of season 2 sets the stage for a truly compelling third season. After getting to the bottom of the bombing, Kate is shocked to discover that disgraced Vice President Grace Penn ordered the attack for strategic reasons. With that (literally) explosive news, Kate angles for the Vice Presidency herself, though many are unsure if she’s ready for the job.
Using the leverage she has thanks to her husband, Hal, Kate is finally able to expose Grace’s plan to the President, though it doesn’t have the indended conseqences. With President Rayburn now dead, Penn becomes President, and she’ll obviously have it out for Kate since she knows that the ambassador is on to her. How this affects the plot of The Diplomat season 3 remains unknown, but the tension will likely be higher than ever before.
